News WCC's First Cookbook
Community Church cooks up recipe book
Nothing can match the savory scents hovering over the tables at a church potluck dinner. It is here, that women, and men too, become famous for the culinary goodies they bring along to fill out the feast. Great-grandma’s flaky apple pie, handed down from generation to generation; hearty meatballs cooked to perfection, resting on a swirl of golden noodles; hot dishes offering any number of delicious flavors; endless, colorful salads and delightful desserts making every choice strategic—“Can I fit a bit of everything on just this one paper plate?” To whomever it was that first suggested all these recipes be compiled into one book—we owe our thanks. When it comes to hearty, home-cooking, nothing hits the mark like a church cookbook.
Though the congregation at Winterset Community Church certainly didn’t originate the idea, the men, women, and even children who call WCC their church home, gladly shared their favorite recipes to compile the church’s first ever cookbook. At final count, more than 400 meal ideas fill the pages of the neatly bound recipe cache—printed right here in Iowa. What’s more, they arrived just in time for Christmas.
“This project will help support our Women’s Ministries,” notes organizer Jess Kleemeier. “We are very happy with the finished product.”
The Winterset Community Church 2010 Cookbook sells for $15. As Kleemeier mentioned, the profits benefit the many programs and outreaches offered by the WCC women’s ministry. Among these are the community-wide Women’s Christmas Breakfast which took place this year on the morning of December 11th. Funds from the women’s ministry help cover the cost of childcare for the moms from all over Madison County who enjoy attending a Friday morning Bible study at WCC. They also help support Thanksgiving and Christmas outreaches to families in need and send care packages to young men and women serving in the military or who are away at college.
If you find yourself interested in adding this Winterset original cookbook to your collection (or wrapping one up as a gift), contact Jess Kleemeier at 462-5753 or send an e-mail to wccsecretary@gmail.comYou may just find you know many of the names that accompany the recipes on each page. It’s almost like cooking with a friend.
